As part of the University's conduct, fitness to practise, and academic appeals processes, panels are held throughout the year to review student cases. To ensure diverse perspectives, the University seeks student representation on these panels to hear and assess individual student cases.
As a member of the student pool, you may be invited to join these panels. Meetings occur on an ad hoc basis, and you'll receive a £40 stipend for each meeting you attend.
Principal Duties 1. Prepare for the panels by ensuring to read and fully understand the information sent to you before the panel is scheduled to take place.
2. Actively participate in panels as required, acting objectively to assess the facts presented by both parties.
3. Engage with the panel hearing and ask appropriate questions that may provide further vital information for the panel to consider.
4. Attend training and development opportunities provided by the University in preparation for the role and throughout the duration of time in post.
5. To always act with the utmost confidentiality and discretion when handling the sensitive information that you will encounter in this role.
6. To meet with Kingston Students' Union (KSU) staff when relevant to de-brief and provide feedback year-round.
Person Specification 1. Able to assess the cases objectively and fairly you are on the panel for, providing sound judgement and insight when deciding outcomes.
2. Passionate about education and the difference it can make to individuals and communities.
3. An effective communicator, able to articulate themselves to a variety of stakeholders.
4. Able to analyse and understand complex problems from a variety of different points of view.
5. Able to empathise with students in a variety of complex situations whilst also acting fairly.
6. Always uphold confidentiality and GDPR expectations.

Terms of appointment The appointment is for one academic year, running from October 2024 through to August 2025, but with the potential option to extend.
Time commitment As well as attending the panels themselves, you will be required to read and digest the paperwork before they occur. Furthermore, there will be compulsory training and development sessions that require your attendance. Meetings will be held virtually but there may be some instances where they take place on a campus.
