Disability History Month
Disability History Month occurs every year, with this year it being from 14th November to 20th December in the UK. Each year the Disability History Month is assigned a different theme, and this year’s theme is Disability, Employability and Livelihood.
Throughout this month your Union has organised many events in collaboration with your societies. So keep an eye on our events’ page.
Disability, Employability and Livelihood
Young disabled people unfortunately are facing challenges at every stage of their life, including when transitioning from education to work. However, under the Equality Act 2010, disabled people have the right for reasonable adjustments. If this is not met, then it is disability discrimination which is unlawful.
Here are some reasonable adjustments disabled students may find helpful:
• Modifying or acquiring equipment, such as special keyboards for those with arthritis.
• Changing the recruitment process, which could mean modifying procedures for testing or assessment to ensure they don’t disadvantage people with particular disabilities, or allowing extra time during selection tests.
How can I be an ally?
As allies, we can take steps during Disability History Month and beyond to combat Disability harassment and discrimination by:
- Educating ourselves about disabled diagnosis.
- Supporting media that portrays disabled people in a positive light.
- Ensuring events are held in accessible spaces.
