In late November, the Government confirmed details of the proposed international student levy. Due to come in from 2028, a 6% levy will be placed on international students’ tuition fees.

In partnership with Kingston University, KSU have written to local MP and Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Sir Ed Davey, to express our joint disagreement and disappointment with this policy.

We look forward to hearing from Sir Ed, and continuing to work together with the University to make a stand against the proposed international student levy.

You can read the letter, co-written by KU Vice Chancellor, Steven Spier and KSU President, Hamza Haroon, below.

4:56pm on 12 Jan 26 As student representatives, we strongly oppose the proposed international student levy and the additional financial pressure it places on international students. International students already contribute significantly to university communities academically, culturally, and economically and this levy risks making higher education in the UK even less accessible. We believe this policy unfairly targets international students and undermines the values of inclusivity and global engagement that universities stand for. We stand in solidarity with international students and will continue to challenge policies that increase financial burden and inequality within higher education.
