Transgender Awareness Week is observed from the 13th to the 19th of November worldwide, shining a light on the issues faced by the Transgender community and promoting visibility for Transgender individuals.
Transgender Awareness Week culminates in Transgender Day of Remembrance on November 20th, established by Gwendolyn Ann Smith in 1999 to honor the life and death of Rita Hester, a Black Transgender woman who was murdered in Boston. This day serves as a time to commemorate the tragic losses of Transgender community members due to violent acts.
How can I be an ally?
As allies, we can take steps on Transgender Day of Remembrance and beyond to combat Transgender harassment and discrimination. By:
- educating ourselves about Transgender individuals,
- sharing our own pronouns such as in email signatures and badges
- supporting media that portrays Transgender people in a positive light.
Get involved: “The life & death of Marsha P. Johnson” movie viewing
