It’s Trans Awareness Week!
Amidst a growingly violent political climate for trans people, it’s more important than ever before that we celebrate and show up for our trans friends, family members, peers and colleagues.
What is Trans?
Trans, or Transgender, is an umbrella term used to describe a person whose gender identity is not the same as the sex they were assigned at birth. This also includes non-binary people. Non-binary people may feel they are not exclusively male or female and embody neither or both gender simultaneously.
You cannot tell who is a transperson just be looking at them, nor can you assume anything about them, such as their sexual identity. We all have complex identities and knowing one thing about a person does not definitively mean anything else about them!
Trans Awareness Week is celebrated from the 13th of November, culminating on Trans Day of Remembrance on the 20th. During the week we celebrate trans joy, achievements and highlight equality for transgender and non-binary people. Worldwide, this week aims to advance advocacy around the issues of prejudice, discrimination, and bring an end to unnecessary violence affecting the transgender community.
On 20th November, victims of transphobic violence are commemorated.
At Kingston University and KSU, we are celebrating Trans Awareness Week with a variety of fun and educational events. The LGBTQIA+ & Allies Student Society will also be hosting a Trans Awareness Scavenger Hunt on Tuesday 18th (event up soon).
