Women's History Month grew from the global feminist movement that began in the late 1970s, when educators and activists highlighted how women’s contributions were missing from mainstream history. By the 1980s it had taken root internationally, and the UK adopted the March observance alongside International Women’s Day. The month is shaped by the legacy of British women’s organising too, from the suffrage movement to workplace strikes and campaigns for equal rights. Its purpose is simple and still urgent: to recognise women’s achievements and challenge the huge inequality that still persist.
Women’s History Month is a chance to recognise the women who shape our lives and communities. This year at Kingston we are celebrating women's creativity, strength, rest, resistance and joy.
