Fitness to practice

Advice for professional courses

If you are enrolled in a professional course (e.g., Nursing, Midwifery, Social Work, and Pharmacy) you will have your fitness to practise monitored by the University throughout your studies. At the end of the course, the University will sign off whether you are fit to practise in your chosen profession.

If the University has concerns that you have not adhered to the standards set by relevant professional bodies (e.g., NMC, HCPC, NCTL) or the University’s Code of Practice for students, an investigation into your fitness to practise may be initiated, potentially leading to a formal hearing.

During the Investigation

  • You may be suspended from practice placements.
  • Any professional work outside your course may be paused.
  • University teaching may be suspended.

How we can help

  • Explain the Fitness to Practise process.
  • Provide guidance on academic policies.
  • Review and draft statements for meetings.
  • Advice on structuring your case and what evidence to provide.
  • Accompany you to formal Fitness to Practise meetings.
