A notice to quit from the University halls of residence indicates that you have breached one or more licence agreements, and you are required to vacate the halls. Typically, you are given 28 days to move out and find alternative private accommodation.
Breaking a Licence Agreement: When offered a place in halls, you must pay a deposit and sign an agreement outlining the conditions of your licence.
Warnings Before Issuing a Notice to Quit: Usually, the halls of residence manager provides warnings before issuing a notice to quit. However, based on the severity of the breach, you might not receive a warning.
Appealing a Notice to Quit: You have 5 days to appeal a notice to quit. Your appeal must be based on one or more of the following grounds:
Submit your appeal to studentcomplaints@kingston.ac.uk. A Notice to Quit Panel, comprising a staff member from Academic Registry and a Student Officer from the Union of Kingston Students, will review your appeal.
They will notify you of their decision in writing. You do not attend a hearing.
If you do not move out by the specified date, the University will begin legal proceedings to evict you from the halls, and you will be responsible for the legal costs.
If your appeal is unsuccessful, you will receive a completion of procedures letter, allowing you to appeal to the Office of the Independent Adjudicator for Higher Education (OIA). More information can be found here. However, you are still expected to move out by the date specified in the notice to quit letter.
